Scary movie of the day was the onerously titled Hell House, LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor, the third sequel to Hell House, LLC, which I first watched two years ago and liked quite a bit. HHLLC2: The Abbadon Hotel was so boring and poorly assembled I shut it off after about 15 minutes, and never bothered to watch HHLLC3: Lake of Fire. I have been hearing some positive buzz around Origins, so I decided I'd give it a chance.
It's a faux documentary using found footage shot by Margot, the founder of NetSleuths.com, her girlfriend Rebecca who works in real estate, and her brother Chase, who has some history of mental illness but is doing much better now. The three died after spending four nights in the notoriously haunted Carmichael Manor, where a family was murdered a million years ago in 1989.
The found footage is much less annoying that it could be, as the whole film--even the "found" part--is scripted. There are a lot of Dutch angles and some awkward handheld camera movement, but it's well-controlled so it's neither annoying nor motion sickness-inducing. There are some of the usual haunted house tropes--a locked door for which the caretaker has lost the key but "it's just old storage;" the ghosts and other scary scenery are pretty much only visible through the camera; the car won't start; the voice of a loved one is impersonated by the ghosts.
And scary clowns.
I liked a lot of this movie; it had some good scares, likable/sympathetic characters, and a quick-moving plot. But scary clowns? Who were in a cult?? Who committed mass suicide at the tangentially related Abaddon Hotel and probably also murdered the family at the Manor??? AND THE WHOLE TIME ARE CLOWNS????
"Scary" clowns are not scary. They just aren't. Can we all agree? Stylized scary clowns in movies are just the laziest avatar for a Slasher there is, at this point. Once upon a time, there were some real clowns, trying to be funny, who were in some real way kind of creepy or might have been scary to little children.
But "clown" does not equal "monster." Just showing me a clown does not fill me with terror. Even if it's a black and white clown (these are). Even it's got blood in its mouth (these have). Somewhere in the last 20 or 30 years we all seemed to agree that clowns are universally terrifying. This is a lie we tell ourselves and each other, and when the Big Bad in a movie is a clown, sorry, I'm judging you.
There were a lot of technical things that annoyed me about the movie, too, like the fact it was shot entirely digitally and while minor efforts were made to make glitchy video, old VHS, and old film look authentic, the effects used to do so were so wrong. It just took me right out of it. Like, I'm sure Final Cut Pro or whatever has a "VHS-look" filter, and GarageBand probably has an "old videotape/lofi" setting. . .but they suck. It's not that hard to make yr movie look and sound like it was shot on a home video camera from the '80s; these guys clearly just don't care. Most people watching, born recently, will not care, but I was supremely annoyed at how obvious it was that ALL of this movie was shot on an iPhone or a Canon vlogging camera with no regard for authenticity.
Also the girls in the 1989 sequences were dressed like pilgrims.
Also, too, the lead character was both a true crime websleuth AND a ghost-hunter, and those two people are rarely, if ever, the same person. They're just two almost completely separate types of people in two different types of online communities, and it seemed a little too convenient that Margot was both.
I'm complaining a lot but I did like this movie OK. I won't watch it again, but I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a haunting, and/or found footage. It's not nearly as bad as I make it sound.

2023 Horror Challenge: [64/?]
↳“What's on their videos are things that can't be unseen.” Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor (2023) dir. Stephen Cognetti
Plot: A group of cold case investigators stay at the Carmichael Manor. After four nights, the group was never heard from again. What is discovered on their footage is even more disturbing than anything found on the Hell House tapes.
Starring: Bridget Rose Perrotta, Destiny Leilani Brown, James Liddell & Gideon Berge
So, this actually became a last minute addition to the Halloween watches just because it being released yesterday made it so it arrived just in time for this year's challenge. Why put it off, right? Considering I actually appreciated the first movie for what it was and have been hearing it may be considered an improvement for the franchise, I was curious. Yes, I haven't seen the second or third one yet but it's probably true, and since these stories are one-offs (while they clearly take place in the same universe), I figured it was okay to skip around a bit. In terms of acting and visuals and things of that sort, it is a bit of an improvement from at least the original because they kept that cast tight enough that we can focus on who's who more. Now with it being filmed the way it is, it does lose some of that rawness from the original but it's just more visually pleasing to watch so I can't really complain to be honest. It's still found footage so format-wise it's gonna be a mixed bag for people regardless if they hate that subgenre. lol Like I said, the acting and chemistry within the group is better but I wouldn't say that makes it any less frustrating when you see the characters make poor decisions. Bridget Rose Perrotta brings a lot of energy to her role as Margot, which I commend her for, but sometimes in the beginning at times I wanted to be like, can she chill out a bit? XD Not gonna lie, I was very confused how this was gonna be a prequel since it's present-day and still am but they did reference the second movie plenty so at the very least I know it was tied to something in the franchise. Love how I went from funny clowns to scarier clowns this morning but that was definitely a coincidence. The creepy vibes managed to get me again at certain parts so I gotta give the creators kudos for that. I decided to be a chicken and save this for a morning watch cuz I was counting on that. lol I think I got what I expected from this, despite any flaws, so overall, it was worth the watch in my book. I'm open to them doing another movie if that post-credits scene is any indication.

I love the original Hell House LLC movie and have watched it every year for several years now with my friends around/on Halloween (not the sequels cos they kinda suck), but we got to watch the new one that came out recently and it was really good!
I felt it was even scarier than the original while also expanding on the existing lore in a fun new way. Adding it to our yearly spooky season watchlist. 😌

Horror Movie Review – Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor (2023)
Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor is a 2023 American found footage horror film written and directed by Stephen Cognetti and produced by Joe Bandelli. Hell House LLC Origins serves as both a sequel and a prequel to the original Hell House LLC (2015/2016) and is the fourth installment overall in the Hell House LLC franchise. I wasn’t actually aware that Hell House LLC had turned into a…

I just got done watching HELL HOUSE LLC ORIGINS: THE CARMICHAEL MANOR and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed on the name of the title of the film. It just seems more of a prequel than an origin story to me. And gives me more questions than answers from the first three sequels of Hell House that hasn't been answered or explained yet.
